Alan Turing

Deterioration

Circumstance

Throughout his life, Turing faced discrimination and unjust condemnation

In January 1952, Turing was prosecuted for indecency over his relationship with another man in Manchester.

"Alan Turing's treatment by the British government was a national disgrace. His persecution and chemical castration for being gay was a barbaric act, and he should be remembered as a hero for his contributions to the war effort and the field of computer science, not as a criminal."

- Peter Tatchell

In March of that year, Turing pleaded guilty and, to avoid imprisonment, had to agree to be chemically castrated. He lost his security clearance, lost his job, and was forced to live with a criminal record.

Fallen

In a tragic ending, Alan Turing was found dead by his housekeeper on June 8th, 1954. This tragic death, a highly controversial event, is believed to have been a suicide.

Reflection

Daily Mail.

In 2013 Turing was given a posthumous royal pardon.

"The mistreatment of Alan Turing by the British government was a horrific injustice. He was a brilliant mind and a national hero, yet he was persecuted and chemically castrated for being gay. His legacy should serve as a reminder of the need for tolerance and acceptance and the importance of fighting against discrimination."

- Audrey Tang

"Alan Turing was a genius who made fundamental contributions to the field of computer science and to the outcome of the Second World War. The way he was treated by the British government was a gross violation of human rights and he should be remembered as a hero, not a criminal."

- Brian Greene

Turing's prosecution and conviction for homosexuality was a tragic end for a brilliant man who had made significant contributions to science and society.
